Cover bands don’t change the world

As the weather began to get cold and wet, my cycling moved from the road to the trainer. And doing so meant one thing — the need for some fresh items on my iPod. I stumbled upon the podcast for The Accidental Creative and immediately loved it. In fact, I loved it so much, I bought the book (review forthcoming) and have begun to implement some of the practices to be prolific, brilliant and healthy. Todd Henry ends each of his podcasts with the line, cover bands don’t change the world. The idea is that we each have to find our own voice and, most importantly, use that unique voice in whatever way feels best to you.

I was thinking about this tagline this morning when browsing my Facebook feed. Nearly every day my friend Tracy begins with an interesting quote. Today’s quote, courtesy of writer Maria Robinson, felt particularly important to me: Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.

Combine the two thoughts and it’s a powerful way to start the week. What do you want to create today? Sure, your week may be filled with meetings, appointments, deadlines and to-do lists, but if you give yourself a few moments to reflect, you’ll see a blank canvas upon which you can create your new beginning, write your new ending and bring your original, authentic voice to life in your world.

With new beginnings this week, there are few things not to miss on the blog:

  • Be sure to leave a comment on the stress-busting post from last week. Everyone who leaves a comment is entered in a random drawing for a free set of Hit The Deck! workout cards from Jenny Evans of Powerhouse Performance Coaching.
  • Announcing the Women’s Adventure Retreat! Take some time for winter play on Sunday, Feb. 12 at Chestnut Ridge Park in Orchard Park, N.Y. The day will include yoga, snowshoeing, nutrition and cooking information over lunch along with some insight on how to create and reach your epic win. • And coming late this week, video posts with weekly lessons from my inner athlete. You won’t want to miss this.
